Berlin photographer Lars Nickel has a day job as a window washer. As he squeegeed the massive windows on the stunning altbau apartments in Germany’s capital city, he also observed the light filtering in and started asking residents if he could take portraits of them in their apartments, home-style. The result of this five-year project is his photo book, Beletage. It showcases the high ceilings, wood floors, massive windows and simple, clean aesthetic you find in many of the apartment buildings in Berlin. More than that, it capture the humans of modern Berlin in their natural environs. Some of the images capture their attitude, their mood and die Moden (their fashions) at the dawn of a new Century.
